When one of the Eco Street forum members, Jamble mag, wanted to know why the wrapping of their favourite chocolate biscuits wasn’t recyclable, a letter was duly dispatched to United Biscuits to find out why.

Here is the reply that they received:

Dear Jamble Magazine,

“The packaging is made from a material called polypropylene, which is plastic and metal combined and therefore, not currently recyclable.

“Many years of research has gone into ensuring that the best packaging is used to maintain product freshness throughout its life and polypropylene is considered to be the best material for this purpose.

“Research has shown that the packets we discard of responsibly in the normal household waste can play an important part in land-fill stabilisation, as normal household waste can break down quite quickly.

“However, we suggest that the best way to dispose of this type of packaging is to burn the material, as this will create energy.”

It’s clear from this reply that there are big businesses out there without the foggiest idea about what their impact is on our environment, and even think that they are doing good works by not providing recyclable or biodegradable packaging.

“A simulation to make you think” is what 3rd World Farmer calls itself. This online “game” will test your farming skills against drought and pests, guerillas and the collapse of the national bank.

Tonight is the start of the BBC’s Climate Chaos series of programmes, and first up is David Attenborough’s Are We Changing Planet Earth? It will air tonight on BBC One at 9pm.

Talking to Michael McCarthy for The Independent, Attenborough says:

” I was sceptical about climate change. I was cautious about crying wolf…

… But I’m no longer sceptical. Now I do not have any doubt at all. I think climate change is the major challenge facing the world…

…one of the things I don’t want to do is to look at my grandchildren and hear them say: “Grandfather, you knew it was happening – and you did nothing.”
