Not only do most mattresses contain, pesticides, petroleum, or other chemicals, but a baby is at the stage in life when people are most susceptible to this kind of contamination. Untreated Organic Cotton and hypo-allergenic Latex are best, but you can improve your babies health a lot by just getting a mattress without the Flame Retardant Boric Acid... If you get a doctor's permission, there are plenty of small mattress manufacturer's who will make you a mattress without this flame retardant. Great list, although it all might boil down to #5, be a good example. ;)

Start 'them' young. Later, as I can attest, is much harder if not plain impossible. I was a late convert to the green cause, and am confronted with the challenge of trying to rally two teen agers, one of them very rebellious as it is, and not one bit concerned about the cause.
