Are you one of those people who would prefer not to have a car but aren’t quite sure how life would work without one? Or maybe you’re just dreaming of ways to be greener but don’t have a clue how you can change the way you live? I have a couple of copies of “Do Humans Dream of Electric Cars?” to give away to two EcoStreet readers who would like to know more about liberating themselves from our car culture. To stand a chance of winning a copy, please leave a comment about your favourite form of transport. The draw will take place on the 31st of July 2009. Winners will be contacted by email.

Do Humans Dream of Electric Cars? is a fun book using lively illustrations and some pretty cool art to demonstrate the many alternatives to the car as a form of transportation. There are plenty of positive ideas for individuals, organisations and communities at large to lessen their impact on our planet. The book has a UK bias, but some of the statistics aside, it is as relevant to the South Africa driver as it is to the British, even more so now that we’re going to be getting some pretty fantastic new public transport in the form of the BRT.

Do Humans Dream of Electric Cars? is published by award winning green publisher Alistair Sawday in association with Sustrans, the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity.

  • I like that! My favourite form of transport is my motorbike. I know, it is fuel propelled, but is still very eco-friendly when compared to cars. A bike can do more than 30 km per litre, guarantee high speeds and save a lot of parking space

  • This book seems like a great way to get people to rethink transport and incite a change!

I’m partial to two wheeled transportation – I’ve been car-light/ getting around mostly by motorcycle for 3-4 years. Recently put my car up for sale, and trying to rearrange my life so I can commute by bicycle.

I love taking the subway, especially when the trains are above ground. I finally get to look out the window on a journey and step on and off without worrying about fuel levels!

Hmm, it really depends. If I could, I would walk everywhere, but living out in the countryside, that’s just not really possible. When I lived closer to civilisation I used to cycle everywhere and I really liked that. It’s fast, good exercise and easy to find parking :) In big cities I also enjoy subway rides (for the same reasons as Siobhan described).

My fave transportation is my tandem kyak… one because I can use a renewable energy source (my muscle) and two because I get to spend time in the serene with the most amazing lover any woman could ever have… and I can watch him rowing!

  • My car, maybe this book can change my mind.

  • I live in a town of 60,000 and my favorite mode of travel is walking. Walking gets me where I want to go and it keeps down my weight and blood pressure which are problems for me. Just yesterday I met a friend at the movie theater and she asked, “Where did you park?” I replied,”At home.” She was shocked that I would walk one mile instead of drive. “It was only one mile … one mile,” I told her. Not really far at all. You would have thought I had said that I hiked in from another city.

  • I moved to DC after college because of the Metro rail system – I always wanted to live in a city where I absolutely never ever ever would need a car – DC is great in that respect (among others).

  • I think i found this post very late, however, it is great to read your post. Everyone nowadays wants to have an electric car as it is Eco friendly and with global warming it is our need. Atleast i can say that i dream of an electric car. In addition, i have heard Toyota is working on solar power driven car.
