It would have to be in decent shape, I've seen quite a few old tires where pieces of metal start to stick out where the tread is especially worn down (yikes!). I think I like the idea of the tire planter better. In my mind there are some things that are acceptable as a child's toy but I don't think an old tire is necessarily one of them. If I ever do make a tire swing I'd probably go out and buy a new tire for it, I guess that defeats the purpose of recycling one but if my kids going to be swinging and hanging on it I'd prefer to know the quality that its in.
