It is really great to think about all the possibility out there in the world in regards to change rather then all the doom and gloom. I really believe that a critical mass of people working for change and starting GREEN/fairtrade companies and shopping at them is a huge part of turning our society around. A great example of being both business savvy and committed to positive social change is the website: http://nonprofitshoppingmall.com/shop/index/144.
The link above is all set up so that you can buy from several "green" stores and a percent of your sale goes to the Environmental Defense Fund but you can pick from a long list of nonprofits.
Imagine this really taking off and everyone's shopping actually being part of the solution. At the very least it gives everyday people an opportunity at being philanthropists, therefor giving them an experience of being powerful. That's certainly the start, realizing that our choices, purchases and votes really do matter.

I would be interested in seeing factual information to substantiate AlienFamer's comment. Many high-end luxury brands make efforts to work with companies that are treating employees fairly. Certianly, there is no guarantee in any sector. However, the word "usually" is likely inaccurate.

Great article, its sad the most expensive cloths today are usually the ones made by children working 19 hour days. I would much rather buy high quality hemp clothing made locally.
