In the most ambitious move by a UK supermarket yet, Marks & Spencer have announced a plan to spend £200m on a wide-ranging “eco-plan” over the next five years. The planned changes will change the face of the supermarket in Britain, and include going carbon neutral, eliminating the use of landfill, extending sustainable and ethical sourcing, and making use of renewable energy.

“M&S will change beyond recognition the way it operates over the next five years. This is a deliberately ambitious and, in some areas, difficult plan. We don’t have all the answers but we are determined to work with our suppliers, partners and Government to make this happen. Doing anything less is not an option.” Chief Executive Stuart Rose

And if the massive profit making Tesco, and contemporaries Saiinsbury’s and Asda took the same path, what a difference it would make to the state of supermarket shopping in the UK.
