If you can’t read the ad, here’s what it says:

Our Plascon Palette of 2009 is filled with colours that mimic nature and bring its life-giving energy to the home. The colours of air, water, fire and earth. The natural world is an exciting and mutable place. And so, too, is your home.”
After reading this ad, it doesn’t seem there’s anything green about Plascon paints, except maybe the colour. Blatant greenwash? I’m trying to find out more from Plascon. Stay tuned.

As a brand manager from Plascon, I would just like to say that this is in reference to the inspiration for the colours selected in our 2009 palette.
From a technical point of view we do have products that are low VOC as well as working on many manufacturing procedures toward doing our bit for the environment.

Look at the wording – “filled with colours that mimic nature”
Who wants to mimic? It’s a gimmick! They know that the new green rand is viable and makes such economic sense, now and for the future. There are ecofriendly paint companies already in South Africa – look to Breathecoat, Keim and ProNature – which markets itself as 100% ecofriendly AND natural
Plascon was the first paint manufacturer in SA to achieve ISO 14001 status in 2005. We are also the first to launch zero VOC, sero solvent, APEO free and CIT free paint in this country. More than 17 of our existing painjt products meet the Green Building Council’s rating tool.

Thank you for the info. Are your test results available, from the Green Building Council perhaps? A lot of companies nowadays state that they are eco-friendly but if one digs a bit deeper, it’s not always the case. Please advise.
Also: What it CIT free, I couldn’t find any references regarding that?

Hi Marc,
Unfortunately the Green Building Council does not do testing of products. However they do stipulate specific testing methods for VOC levels (ISO/IEC 17025 certified testing laboratory).
We have sent several of our products (Green Star compliant) for testing and have the results.

In addition to this, our Plascon Professional Evolution range, Plascon Double Velvet and Plascon Cashmere have been approved by Eco-specifier.

With regard to the CIT’s – Chloroisothiazolinones are chemical compounds used as preservatives in a diversified range of products including household cleaners, cosmetics and paint.
It’s a pity that the nature of business in SA is the way it is i.e. the little guy will always be flattened by the big guys and the same guys rip off the consumer at every turn. Someone try and price the eco friendly range of paint available out there – you’d be shocked. It came as pleasant surprise to me when I saw the Breathecoat prices. Compete with mainstream paints. Have seen some of the places the product’s been used and feedback’s been wonderful. It’s local – it should be supported.
This is in response to Mr Alex Coggins statement
Plascon “are also the first to launch zero VOC, zero solvent, APEO free and CIT free paint in this country”. Wow that is a BIG statement to make.
Please can you provide proof of this if this is the case.
Furthermore only 17 products that are “Green” out of several hundred, is that good?
