Media hypocrisy: The Independent’s empty gestures

I read with interest a recent article in The Independent titled: Saving the Planet – Empty Gestures. Here is the first paragraph of that article:

At Christmas I was given a copy of the book of the film An Inconvenient Truth, by the American politician Al Gore. It was from two people. One of them drives an SUV and both are frequent fliers. I was given the present at a gathering under recessed halogen spotlights, a popular system that, typically, doubles the electricity consumed by a room’s lighting and greatly increases ceiling heat-loss. Few in the room were wearing anything that, by the standards of earlier ages, could have been considered winter clothing. Some of the food on the table – figs and blueberries – originated several thousand miles away. And, while tap-water in the area is quaffable, bottled mineral water from France accompanied our celebration.

It goes on in a similar vein, I recommend a read of the whole article. So imagine my surprise when I came across this entry at Hugg:

The Independent headlines with “Made in Britain, Dumped in China – How our waste causes death and disease 6,000 miles from home” draws to the public’s attention to how the UK’s waste plastic packaging is shipped halfway around the world to China. Here’s the hypocrisy; the printed version of the newspaper runs a quarter page advertisement; “Detox Your Body – a free bottle of Vittel water when you buy The Independent newspaper”. Where does The Independent newspaper think that the thousands of empty plastic bottles from this promotion will end-up? – My money is on China!

Oh the irony of it all!
