Making sense of garden chemical disposal

The National Household Hazardous Waste Forum has launched a campaign to help local authorities implement their campaigns for safe use, storage and disposal of garden chemicals. At this time of year, garden chemicals can make up over 50% of chemicals returned to household waste recycling centres. There has also been a spate of panic induced illegal dumpings of garden chemicals after the European-wide banning of hazardous pesticides and chemicals like creosote.

Householders are often unsure how to deal with unwanted garden chemicals, and research has shown that the public has an inclination to “hoard” unwanted and unused in garden chemicals sheds for up to 30 years.

This free online guide provides help to local authorities to enable them to manage this problem, as well as resources to educate the public, like information leaflets and posters. There is also a Chemical Disposal Service Finder for the public to use by entering their postcode to find out where the nearest chemical collection or disposal service is.
